The Dynamic English Department

The English Department is a fast and steadily expanding department with teachers wholly committed to teaching, translating as well as researching in a wide range of studies. Its growing reputation has partially resulted from its obtaining Ningbo Municipal Key Specialty and Zhejiang Provincial Key Specialty successively in a year’s time. Attracting high calibre teaching staff from different parts of China as well as from other countries has been a significant factor in securing its reputation and guaranteeing its bright future. The department now boasts a qualified teaching staff of 64, with 5 professors and 14 associate professors, 23 lecturers, 27masters and 2 doctors, actively involved in research projects at different levels. The department places equal emphasis on achieving national standards in both teaching and research.
The English Department offers many high quality courses: Integrated English, English Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Advanced English, Translation, English Lexicology, English Grammar, General Linguistics, English Newspaper Readings, British and American Literature, Western Culture, second foreign languages (German, French or Japanese) and so on. Those courses are designed to encourage systematic study of English language coupled with the western culture and literature, and at the same time, such career-oriented courses as Business English and Interpretation are offered for the purpose of training students’ language skills and making them competitive in the job market.
The department is well equipped with all the principal major equipment and facilities needed for language learning and research. This includes multimedia rooms, language lab and so on. The department contains computers with full access to the Internet, email services and selected bibliographic databases for the use of teachers in their teaching and academic research.
The overall aim of the English Department is to continue to develop into a provincially and then a nationally recognized institution of English language teaching and learning. This will be achieved by the provision of a nurturing environment which fosters creativity and innovation in both teaching staff and students with Wanli Spirit of “ Advancing with the Times and Striving for Self-improvement”. This is a forward-looking department, formed to serve the increasing role of training talents for its locality as well as its nation.
